Development of sustainable refill pouches for a revamped line of products

Keune has been producing premium, high-quality hair products for professionals for over a century. Their experience is extensive. In comparison, the six-year partnership with DaklaPack may seem short, but for us it feels like a long and familiar journey that once began with manufacturing pouches for Keune's keratin-based products.

In 2021, Keune approached us with a new and special packaging request: the development of sustainable refill pouches for the revamped "So Pure" line. DaklaPack embraced this collaboration with enthusiasm, and like the products they created, the process unfolded effortlessly and authentically. In this article Sandra, Senior Buyer at Keune, elaborates on the process, from the start at a drawing board to the finished product.

An eco-friendly packaging solution

The final result is a beautiful matte olive green spoutbag that seamlessly compliments the original Keune dispenser. The packaging features a useful sticker that can easily be removed and placed on the dispenser. This smart solution ensures customers always know what product is inside. Although the end result may seem straightforward, and perhaps even simple, nothing could be further from the truth. Together with Keune, we explored many different ideas and options to arrive at this solution.

The desire for a quick launch and sustainable packaging soon resulted in the choice of our refill pouches. These packages are not only our specialty, but also a sustainable alternative to regular packaging. The flexible packaging generates little waste and more products can be packed in one box, saving on transport. Because both DaklaPack and Keune value sustainability, we will always continue our efforts to implement sustainability optimizations in both the packaging itself and the packaging process.

Together at the drawing board

Choosing our refill pouches was just the beginning, packaging alone isn’t sufficient… We had to revisit the initial concept. By choosing a robust material, we were able to determine the right length, height and width. The choice fell on the 400ml and liter packaging. Adjusting the right ratio proved to be another challenging job. After a long technical process, we were not only able to develop the packaging in the right format, but to also produce it in exactly the same color as the dispenser that Keune makes itself.
